I love the farmer / hunter analogy. Tweet about more than one topic, because most organic farmers plant more than one crop. Sharing real things with real people is what it's all about. Plus, sharing and RT'ing people's messages has had amazing results for me. I had a hard time on twitter at first as I didn't want to e-barge into other people's lives. Once I realized that people come to twitter to READ others' tweets, not just tweet their own, I became much more comfortable sending out my own tweets. Thanks for a great post and enjoyed the comments too.

Welcome to our first dissenting opinion. Unfortunately, for the time being, Twitter is easy to initially manipulate. I can easily add thousands of followers through reciprocity: I blindly follow people and hope they follow me back. Or I can use one of the spam services to build a large following. But why? My relevance and connection to those people is not based on anything real, and they are apt to quickly unfollow. If they do continue to follow, do you really think these folks are going to do anything other than just breeze over my tweet? Click? Maybe once. Buy something from me? Pay for my services? No way. I'll stick to farming, thanks.

I think that if you had anything worthwhile to say, you'd glady take 10k+ followers.

I think you're completely over analyzing the importance of Twitter, while completely underestimating how easy it is manipulate...

To me, your post is nothing more than a..."i would have more friends if i really wanted them, but i don't, and that's why i don't have plans on a saturday night..." cop-out for, well, blogging on a saturday night.

And don't forget...before there was farming, there was hunting/gathering. Don't overestimate your capabilities, you're likely to starve that way.

You shouldn't worry about Twitter....you already missed the boat.

Barney - I think your take on Twitter as a long term growth vehicle is spot on. Building relationships and discovering the new are two of the reasons I use it as well! Cheers, Chris

Agree, with article, and comments. Isn't this the fundamental debate between quality -v- quantity? Perhaps people's use of Twitter as a cyber social space reflects their real-life social space - for some, it's the quantity that's important (party animals!), for others, it's the quality.

Chris,

I'm in total agreement with you. I didn't join Twitter to make money. If it happens, great, but that's not a primary concern.

I did, one time early on, spam my followers with a marketing blurb that I did not read carefully enough. And did it again today with a _Harry Potter_ thing ... again, from not reading carefully enough. But any who follow me are doing it for their own reasons, not mine.

In the relatively short time I've been here, I've followed maybe four or five non-Twitter links. And none of them were worth my time. I've no cause to think that it would be any different if I posted a bunch of links. Those who follow me are no more likely to click them than I have been.

(Way to many I's in that paragraph.)

Twitter serves two functions, to my mind. One is the establishment of relationships that may prove beneficial over time; the other is the discovery of new venues/people that would not otherwise have shown up on my radar.

Twitter is a growth opportunity, not a financial vessel. As long as I remember that, folk will likely continue to follow me ... some might even appreciate what I have to offer.
